John Elia’s real name was Syed John Asghar and he was born on December 14, 1931 in Amroha. He was the youngest of his siblings. His father Allama Shafiq Hassan Elia was a scholar of Urdu, Persian, Arabic and Hebrew, while his elder brother was Syed Muhammad Taqi, a renowned Urdu scholar, and Raees Amrohi, a well-known Urdu poet.
A prominent writer and well-known columnist Zahida Hina was his spouse. In his youth, June was strongly opposed to the partition of India due to his communist views, but later accepted it as a compromise. Elijah migrated to Pakistan in 1957 and made Karachi his home. Zahida Hina is a progressive intellectual of her style and still writes in two dailies on current affairs and social issues. Zahida gave birth to 2 daughters and a son in June. They divorced in the mid-1980s. After that, June’s condition deteriorated due to loneliness and then Elia passed away on November 8, 2002 in Karachi after a long illness. He is laid to rest in Sakhi Hassan’s Cemetery in Karachi.
The Government of Pakistan awarded him the Presidential Medal for Excellence in 2000 in recognition of his services.
